Septic System Pumping, Repair & Inspections

Plumbing HelpHow often should your septic tank be pumped? While the range varies from every three to five years, the specific answer for your system will vary depending on:

  • Your septic tank’s capacity.
  • Type and amount of solids entering your tank.
  • Volume of water you use—higher usage gives the system more to dispose of.

With proper maintenance, a typical septic system will last up to 30 years. To extend the life of your system, consider the following:

  • Practice water conservation by using water-efficient equipment.
  • Avoid using a kitchen garbage disposal, which will require you to increase the size of your tank by 50%!
  • Never put harsh chemicals or elements that do not decompose in your septic system.
  • Take heed of early warning signs to prevent major problems!

Initial indications that a septic system problem is building include:

  • Slow draining toilets, sinks, showers, tubs, dishwasher or washing machine.
  • Plumbing or septic back up in toilets, sinks, showers or bath tubs.
  • Gurgling sounds in the plumbing system.
  • Odors, wet spots or lush vegetation in the drain field.

Tank & Drain Field Repairs

Do you know where the lines for septic tank’s drain field are located? Such awareness is important:

  • That knowledge will help you prevent damage to the field and, subsequently, to the groundwater.
  • Observing certain conditions occurring along the drain field will alert you to potential problems within your septic tank.

Why should you not build, pave, or landscape on or near the drain field?

  • Drain fields require plenty of oxygen, which is used by bacteria to break down and treat sewage.
  • Soil compaction further prevents oxygen from entering the soil and keeps water from flowing from the drain field.

At Hulsey Environmental Services, we encourage you to take prompt action if you notice any of the following circumstances in proximity to your drain field:

  • Standing liquid, wet spots, or swampy ground in the yard during dry weather
  • Lush vegetation that is larger and more robust than similar plants in other areas of the yard
  • Effluent draining back into the septic tank from the drain field after the septic tank is pumped
