What is a Grease Trap exactHow to service a grease traply?

A grease trap is an engineered system designed to remove FOG (Fats Oils and Grease) from wastewater.

Typically you will find a grease trap in between your internal plumbing system and your external sewage system.

The interior of the grease trap has baffled walls that trap WVO (Waste Vegetable Oil) based on simple buoyancy principles.

 

  • Fat Tends to float
  • Sludge tends to sink.

How to service a grease trap

Typically there are two different types of tanks.  Large in ground tanks placed outside or small tanks placed inside the building usually underneath a counter or sink, both types come in different sizes. The pumping schedule is typically determined by volume of F.O.G. produced and is generally determined by the municipality as well.

Grease Trap serviced?

 

  • Failure to service your grease trap will result in costly repairs, the sludge and FOG from WVO will backup into the building and prevent the grease trap from doing its job and allow grease to flow into the public sewer system. The end result will be service calls to clean lines and fines from public utilities systems.   The public utilities systems inspectors can shut your business down.

 

  • Routine maintenance of your Grease Trap system is mandated by the Office of the Health inspector as a matter of public health concern.

 

How to clean a Grease Trap

Proper Cleaning Procedure for pumping small indoor trap.

1)     Park safely out of way from all obstructions.

2)     Locate trap, and determine if it is to be pumped using truck or portable pump.

3)     Remove lid from trap

4)     Pump all contents of trap

5)     Run hot water into trap from sink to finish cleaning

6)     Pump all remaining contents of trap.

7)     Place lid on trap and place all hoses and tools back on truck.
